[Update: Here's another deal, but for today only: LEGO Batman for $29.98]

Want to avoid that mob above come really early Friday morning? We bet you do. May we humbly suggest an alternative — online shopping! You still have to wake up at an ungodly hour, but at least you can get everything done in your underwear. Cheap Ass Gamer has unveiled a partial list of the PlayStation 3 deals online retailer Amazon plans to offer. We’ll update this post when the full list is available. Each of these deals go live at Friday, November 28th at 3AM EST/12AM PST:

Blu-ray lovers aren’t left out in the cold either, for they have two separate Blu-ray deals going on. The first one is a pre-Black Friday sale on about 128 Sony titles. Many of them are already under $20, but if you buy 4 of them, you get an additional 15% off. If you buy 7, you get another 20% off. If you buy 10 or more, it is 25% off the total. Deal is only valid today and tomorrow. Check out their selection here. The second offer is a buy 2 get 1 free sale on about 94 titles — you can take a look at all of them over here.

A recap of the Hellboy II BD-Live chat

November 24th, 2008 · Comments Off

Filed under:

Were you able to make it to the Blu-ray exclusive live chat with Hellboy II director, Guillermo del Toro? If not, Engadget HD has you covered. The first-ever BD-Live chat didn’t go without its hitches, but there’s hope in knowing future interactive experiences will be better than this. The director touts the Blu-ray disc release an opportunity for the “perfect home theater experience,” as it gives viewers access to a truly encyclopedic view of the production of a film. Hopefully, other big budget movies will be able to follow with their own live commentary sessions in future Blu-ray releases.

Blu-ray releases for the week of November 23rd

November 23rd, 2008 · Comments Off

Filed under:

Will Smith plays an unlikely superhero in the summer blockbuster Hancock. The film beamed with potential in the beginning, but the poor execution brought down what could have been otherwise an edgy satire on the superhero genre. Will the additional 10 minutes in the uncut version change that?

Theatrical releases:

The extremely poor box office performance of Meet Dave begs the question: why do they keep putting Eddie Murphy in leading roles? The Kingdom is an entertaining and action-packed thriller about FBI agents who investigate a bombing in Saudi Arabia … if you can ignore the extremely misguided kill em’ all message it sends about terrorists. Becket unites Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton in a single film — what more could you ask for? Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:

Chat with Guillermo Del Toro in Blu-ray exclusive live chat

November 20th, 2008 · Comments Off

Filed under:

We’re finally starting to see the full potential of BD-Live come to life. BD-Live is the final Blu-ray movie standard, and it adds interactive online content to movies. One of the first discs to take advantage of BD-Live is the Hellboy II Blu-ray disc. Those that own the disc will be able to take part in a live chat with director Guillermo Del Toro this Sunday at 6PM EST. If you’re interested in chatting, you need to register an account at UniversalHiDef.com and then log on to the movie using your PS3 (or BD-Live compatible Blu-ray player).

The potential of BD-Live is quite exciting. Should the Del Toro chat go well, we can only hope that other studios also add these opportunities to their Blu-ray movies.

Sluggish economy blamed for lowered Blu-ray sales expectations

November 17th, 2008 · Comments Off

Filed under:

The Digital Entertainment Group, a consortium of movie studios and electronics manufacturers, presented their “best-case scenario” for winter sales this year. They predict that by year’s end, there will be 10.5 million households equipped to play Blu-ray discs in America, with a majority (8 million) being PS3 systems. While the figure may sound impressive, that estimate is much lower than the 14.4 million households predicted earlier in the year.

The sluggish global economy is being blamed for the lowered expectations for Blu-ray. With recessions hitting most economies in the world, consumers may be reluctant to purchase a high-definition entertainment system. “The only dark cloud is the economy,” David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, told a panel. However, he added the consumer products side of Sony Corp. is “showing no slowdown in the adoption of the PlayStation 3.”

To help spur sales, Blu-ray players have been going on sale, and players can be found for less than $200. Sony is also confident it will be able to sell 4-5 million PS3s from now until March. “We remain pretty confident that we’ll meet our targets for the fiscal year,” said Julie Han, spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Blu-ray releases for the week of November 16th

November 16th, 2008 · Comments Off

Filed under:

While we are wondering why the price difference Wall-E two-disc edition and three-disc edition is a mere 4 cents, you guys can check out this week’s Blu-ray releases:

Theatrical releases:

Tropic Thunder maybe offensive to some, but that didn’t stop it from being extremely funny. Southland Tales might not have been as critically acclaimed as Richard Kelly’s previous flick, but you can’t miss a movie that has Sarah Michelle Gellar in the role of an adult film star that sings a song called Teen Horniness is Not A Crime. Those of who enjoyed Labyrinth should check out MirrorMask, a children’s film with some dark themes that should sit well with tweens and adults alike. Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:
